Until Sunday morning I hadn’t run for a week. Between travel and my work schedule (5:30 am all week!) I just couldn’t run a single mile. That made me feel somewhat of a fraud when I showed up for my RRCA (Road Runner’s Club of America) Coaching class on Friday. Well, not really, but that sentence sounded kind of fun when I was writing it out.
So, moving backwards for the week, I finally ran on Sunday. I didn’t get out until after 6:00, so that meant it was hot, hot, hot! Between LA and San Diego, (and sitting in my air conditioned work) I have not been running in the heat and it practically killed me. Well, maybe not, but it was hard. I only managed six slow miles, and even with that I needed to find shade a few times. But I will be back to my more regular schedule this week, so hopefully things will get better.
As I mentioned, I was at the RRCA coaching class on Friday and Saturday. I’m going to write a full post on the experience, but I will say that it was very informative, well run, and the instructor knew his business. He was also quite funny and he moved like he had just been to a Bo Eason presentation. I left home at 5 am on Friday to be in San Diego by 8:00 (I was on time, which was good because Randy, our instructor, made the latecomers sing when they walked in). I plan to take the online test this coming week, but presuming I pass I will be an RRCA certified coach soon!
Since I was spending the night in San Diego, I asked Nathan and Sarah if I could sleep on their couch. I did have an ulterior motive beyond saving money on a hotel. You guessed it! Samuel!
Look who’s standing, getting teeth, and showing some attitude!
Finally, back to the IDEA World Fitness Convention and my vegan eats. My eating was pretty erratic while I was at IDEA, which is unusual for me. I generally need to eat every few hours. Wouldn’t you know it would be a fitness convention that would throw my normal eating patterns by the wayside.
On the first day, I brought a lot of snacks from home, including a bag of almonds which turned out to be a lifesaver. As expected, there were not a lot of options available at the convention center itself. For the most part they served a lot of over-priced, over-processed food, and the one vegetarian item I saw (aside from an iceberg lettuce salad) was a portabella sandwich, which appeared to get cooked on the grill right alongside the burgers. Sorry, but no.
So, on Thursday, in additions to my almonds, Clif Bars, and bananas, I was really happy to discover that Daiya had a booth at the expo. Not only that, they were steadily serving up samples of their new flavored cream “cheese” spreads and making quesadillas using their vegan shredded cheese. I visited the Daiya booth a lot. I’m actually surprised they didn’t ban me, because I was filling up on their yummy food throughout the weekend.
I also spent a lot of time at the Vitamix booth. They were busily blending up all kinds of smoothies and juices. Boy, I wish I could afford one of those (Santa are you listening?).
Dinner on the first night was the buffet at the InspiRED party. The party was fun, but the food was just okay. My choices were salad and pasta marinara, tasty enough, but not worth photographing or writing too much about. We did take a fun picture before the party, though!
That’s Kelli, Tiffany and me before the InpiRED party.
Before I checked into my hotel on Thursday night, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up some coffee, fruit, water, and snacks. Oh, and some wine. That tided me over for breakfast for three days (not the wine!). On Friday I knew that I needed more than almonds and Daiya, so after checking out the food choices at the convention center food court I walked to a place called the Tierra Cafe that I first visited a couple years ago during the IHRSA convention. It’s about a mile walk, but worth it. I ordered a burrito that was so huge I could only eat half.
I loved that even though the Tierra Cafe was a vegetarian food stand, my burrito was served on a beautiful ceramic plate.
After a long Friday of lectures, workshops, and wandering the expo, I had plans to explore restaurants near my hotel (which was in Silverlake, a little west of downtown Los Angeles), but I was so tired I just finished the second half of my burrito and went to bed early.
Somehow on Saturday, after a run and breakfast at the hotel, I didn’t ever make it for a “real” lunch. Instead I subsisted on my snacks and the Daiya booth. When I got back to the hotel though, I was starving. I finally decided to check out the restaurant that is on the first floor of the hotel, the Vegan House. How perfect is it that my hotel has a vegan restaurant on the property?
I ordered the Green Curry with tofu (they also had faux meat choices) with rice and a spring roll. I decided to take it up my room (that’s where the wine was). The curry was very good, with lots of tofu and veggies and a nicely spicy sauce.
On Sunday, I finished up my hotel food and headed home. It was lunchtime when I was getting close to the Palm Springs area, so I decided to take a little detour and stop by Native Foods in Palm Springs for one last meal on the road. The Chicken Run Ranch Burger was on special, and the soup was Corn Chowder, so that’s what I ordered. It was the best food of the weekend. It’s always good to get home.
That wraps up my IDEA Convention recaps. If you missed the others here they are:

I love these recaps AND seeing your special grandson! ๐ MY LOVE OF Silver Hills Bakery bread!!! ๐ They work for vegans & have 2 gluten free ones too!!!
Debbie Woodruff
I need to try your Silver Hills bread! Where can I find it out where I am?
Jody - Fit at 55
Debbie – I saw various flavors – not all at different store but – Whole Foods, Mother’s Market & Sprouts. There is a store locator as well on the site but does not always work. :O
Debbie Woodruff
I stopped at Sprouts this morning, but no go. Too bad, I’m a bread fan too. Though if, like the Eureka bread I reviewed and loved a few months ago, it is over $5 a loaf I refuse to pay ๐
Jody - Fit at 55
My Sprouts had it on sale – or few couple flavors on sale for $2.99 – they are good flavors too! You should ask yours to stock! The Big 16, Flax & Squirrley were on sale.. otherwise $3.99. I am not turning back! ๐
Running Hutch
Can’t wait to hear more about RRCA!
Debbie Woodruff
I’ll tell you a secret..I passed ๐
Divya @ Eat. Teach. Blog.
Ahhhh, I want you to be my coach! ๐
And Tierra Cafe looks DELICIOUS!!!
Debbie Woodruff
I would love to coach you! Let’s talk :-). We could make blog series!
Charissa
This looks like such a blast! I’d love to go next year (we’ll see!!). And all this food…just makes me happy. Naturally, I’d be much happier if I could just eat it.
Debbie Woodruff
Haha! I love writing about the food (though I get hungry while I’m doing so).
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table
I love seeing how you managed your food. That’s too bad you couldn’t get more at the conference, but it looks like you managed quite well! That Vegan House dish looks awesome!
Debbie Woodruff
The Vegan House was really good. A picture in a foam container didn’t do it justice.
GiGi Eats Celebrities
I’m still really sad that I did not see you! ๐ But I am thrilled that you had a phenomenal time and found some delicious eats to nosh on. Come back to LA soon, will ya! I am sure there are other EXPOs that will be happening later this year!
Debbie Woodruff
I’m sorry that I missed you. Oh, I’m sure I’ll be back ๐
Miz
Im so excited youre doing the coaching.
I may do that marathon YET.
Debbie Woodruff
Ha! Not sure I believe you but I’d be happy to get you there ๐
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama
I’m hungry now! Yum! And I’m so jealous that you got into the RRCA coaching. There was one in my area during the earlier part of the summer. I didn’t get on it early enough and missed a spot. Boo!
Debbie Woodruff
I had to jump right on this one. I wasn’t sure that I could make it, but after waiting a day it was already half full, so I went for it. Glad I did.
misszippy
Lots of good eating! So glad you could find great food on the road.
At RRCA, did Bobby Gessler teach? He’s a local runner/friend and one of the instructors. Not sure which part of the country he usually covers. Anyhow, it’s a great course!
Debbie Woodruff
Randy Accetta was the instructor. He was really good, knowledgeable and funny. He’s the guy in charge of the coaching education program. I really enjoyed the course. I already knew a lot, but I learned a few things too.
Amanda @runtothefinish
yeahhh love that San Diego is so veggie friendly. ok i love everything about that city really ๐ Can’t wait to do RRCA as soon as there is one near me!
Debbie Woodruff
The key is jump right on it when they announce it. Sign up for email notification, that’s how I knew about the class right away. Otherwise they fill up within a couple days.
Amanda @runtothefinish
no doubt, I have the notifications there just haven’t been any that were the right time or location
Kierston @candyfit
You definitely found some great eats while on the road! I love (and always) check out the local grocers when travelling ๐
Debbie Woodruff
{hides face} I was actually at a Vons (Safeway). ๐
Heather (Where's the Beach)
OH – I’m doing the running coach classes this weekend! I’m excited. And I love that you got to meet up with Tiffany. She’s so sweet. I got to meet her last year at a social media conference.
Debbie Woodruff
Enjoy your class! If you’re lucky you’ll get Randy as an instructor..he was great. Though I’m sure they are all good.
Tiffany is a doll. Love her ๐
Heather (Where's the Beach)
Actually, it is Randy. Good to know. Did classes actually take the full day? Ours are scheduled 8-5.
Debbie Woodruff
Tell Randy that Debbie the vegan from the San Diego class says howdy! He’ll know that the blogging world is HUGE!
The class took the full day and it could have gone on longer. There is a lot to cover but Randy keeps it moving and interesting.
Have fun! I already took my test and passed ๐
Heather (Where's the Beach)
Oh awesome – congratulations!!! And I’ll try to remember to tell him hi for you!
Elle
I love to check out the groceries in areas I travel to, as well… and because we don’t have them in Canada, I am always THRILLED to find a Trader Joe’s especially.
Debbie Woodruff
I’m spoiled because I have a nearby Trader Joes, but it’s pretty new so I remember the TJ jealousy ๐
fizzgig
I love daiya cheese…just not for melting. I enjoy it in wraps and salads, and all things that cheeses top, but I don’t enjoy its meltiness. And if I could live on almonds I would!
I am envious of that vegan burrito! it looks amazing!!
Debbie Woodruff
It was really good.
I go through a bag of raw almonds in just a few days. My favorite snack.
