This post has been made possible by Gerolsteiner Mineral Water through my association with Fit Approach. All opinions are my own.
As I mentioned recently, I will be participating in the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Detox! I, along with the many people who participate will be challenging ourselves to give up our favorite beverages like soda, juice, coffee, tea, and alcohol and drink only Gerolsteiner Natural Sparkling Mineral Water for five days, September 12-16.

Even though I won’t be making any changes in my eating, I know that I will be making a difference in the way I feel and my general health by simply cutting out my favorite beverages. I’ve been wanting to “clean up” my plant-based diet and I know that this challenge is a great first step.
What’s Hiding in Your Favorite Beverages?
Juice
Many people still think that drinking juice is a good replacement for sodas. They sound healthy, right?
But juice, even 100% juice is loaded with sugar. Some of them even have more than regular soda! You can expect from 25-30 grams of sugar in 8 ounces of your juice. That is a lot of sugar without very much nutritional value in return.
Sugar adds extra calories for one thing. Many people are taking in an extra 500 calories simply from the sugar in their favorite beverages and juices.
Sugar is also bad for your teeth, causes your blood sugar to fluctuate, and it contributes to obesity and diabetes.
Diet Soda
When we all jumped on the diet soda train years ago, we thought because we’d be saving all those calories it was a good thing. Um, not so much.
The artificial sweeteners in diet soda actually contribute to weight gain! They trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode. Artificial sweeteners also contribute to sweet cravings, and have many of the bad effects of real sugar.
Many of the fake sweeteners have been found to cause headaches and they may also be bad for your bones.
Coffee/Tea/Energy Drinks
While some studies have shown that there are some benefits to moderate amounts of caffeine, it has its downside too.
Daily consumption of over 500 mg. of caffeine (around 5 cups of coffee) can cause restlessness, irritability, upset stomach, and fast heartbeat.
Even moderate amounts of around 300 mg. (2-4 cups of coffee) may increase the risk of low birth weight babies in pregnant women.
Caffeine has addictive qualities as well, as many people who have tried to give it up have learned. Skipping that morning cup of coffee has been known to cause headaches, fatigues, depression, and irritability.
Alcohol
While there are some benefits associated with moderate use, there are still health risks related to drinking alcohol.
First of all, what is moderate? That varies by gender and weight, but in general one to two drinks a day is considered moderate. Even that amount can disrupt sleep, cause after effects, and cloud judgement.
Alcohol, even in small amounts, can interact with common medications including acetaminophen, antidepressants, pain killers and sedatives.

I gave up diet soda 3 years ago and switched to sparkling water. Best move ever! I will not be giving up coffee though 🙂

That is the part I’m a little worried about. 🙂
