Tomorrow is the International Day of Happiness! It’s also the first day of Spring! It’s a great time to take a moment to think about some of the simple things that make us happy (like the first day of Spring).
What is the International Day of Happiness? It is a day to be happy, of course. It was established in 2012 by the United Nations as a way to recognize the importance of happiness and well-being as goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world.
It’s been a tough year for everybody. So many things were canceled, including races, concerts, travel, and even family gatherings. At first, it was difficult to think about being happy. Many of us just felt sad, scared, and a little angry.
Fortunately, thanks to my husband and my own optimistic personality, I was able to pull myself up and find happiness in simpler things. The small things that surround us every day.

International Day of Happiness – March 20, 2021
The International Day of Happiness seems like a great time to share some of the small things that make me happy. Things that I will continue to appreciate even after life returns to normal.
Celebrate the International Day of Happiness by telling me what makes you happy. And you can check out 5 simple things that make me happy too. #internationaldayofhappiness #happy @adidaswomenClick To Tweet5 Things that Make Me Happy
Here are five things that make me happy. In no particular order.
Outdoor Dining
Here in Southern California, indoor dining has been closed since last fall. Outdoor dining is allowed, but in all honesty, I haven’t been to a restaurant since last March.
My version of outdoor dining has been for my husband and me to pick up a sandwich and take it to the park. There we eat our sandwich and feed the ducks. And the pigeons. And even the turtles. The best kind of outdoor dining. We will continue this even after restaurants open.
Running
You know I love running. Running makes me happy. Whether I’m running fast or slow, alone or with a friend, on the road or on the trails, with my husband and dogs or without. I love running. Not only does running make me happy it has helped me control my anxiety over the last year.
My Dogs
I have a lot of dogs, as you know. They can be annoying, stinky, and messy. But boy, do they make me happy.
My Husband
I cannot express how lucky I am to be married to my husband Alan. I simply can’t imagine having to shelter in place for months by myself. I’m fortunate that we get along so well that even though we were spending days at a time at home, alone, with nowhere to go, we not only survived but thrived. He was my rock and yes, he makes me happy every day.
This Outfit
I admit it. Clothing can make me happy. Just looking at these adidas 7/8″ Believe This tights, designed by artist Egle Zvirblyte, makes me smile. Wearing them makes me pretty happy too. They fit like a glove and feel like a second skin when I’m wearing them.
They are part of the Women in Power collection and feature bold, bright primary colors, shapely figures, and vibrant tigers. They are made with Primegreen, a series of recycled high-performance materials, and they absorb moisture so you can stay fresh and dry while you work out.
I love the adidas Ultra Powerful tank too, both the bright colors and the message. I actually feel Ultra Powerful when I’m wearing it. It’s made from sustainable cotton and has a loose but flattering fit. And yes, it’s a great reminder that you are powerful.

What a fun post! My husband has really come through for me this year, especially lately, when I was really struggling. I feel very fortunate. And my sister is cancer-free!
I love the pattern on those tights! They make me happy!
Debbie Woodruff
I’m so happy to hear about your sister! That’s such great news. π
Darlene S Cardillo
Great idea for a post.
Racing again makes me happy.
Snow melted so my running paths are available.
More indoor and outdoor gatherings since many have gotten their vaccines.
My hubby and most of my friends have gotten both vaccines.
My family is healthy.
Debbie Woodruff
Love all of your happy things! Yes, my hubby and I have gotten both vaccines though we haven’t had any gatherings yet. Hopefully we’ll get to see our grandchildren soo.
Deborah Brooks
Those are really fantastic tights and I like the bike shorts option as well. This year, I have really come to realize more than ever what and who are important to me. Happy happiness day!
Debbie Woodruff
I love the bike shorts too. They really do make me happy. π
I think this past year really has taught us many things about what’s important. Yes, we can still want many of the old things (races, concerts) but we’ve learned to appreciated the things that are really important.
Catrina
Oh, I love those tights, Debbie!
Running makes me happy, too. Isn’t it great that we could run as much as we wanted to despite the pandemic?
Does Alan read your blog? He must be very happy, too! π
Debbie Woodruff
Thank goodness we could run during the pandemic! It’s the thing that kept me sane.
Jenny
Great post! Who knew there was such a thing as an International Day of Happiness? I’m glad you told us so I didn’t miss it! So many things to be happy about, even with all this chaos around us… friends, family, pets, running, running and more running… have a happy day, Debbie!
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! It really is good to remember the small things because for the most part it was the big things that were canceled.
Laurie
Thanks for spreading the word about International Happiness Day. I had no idea! You do have a lot to make you happy. We all should take stock of the wonderful things we have in our lives rather than be sad about what we have lost over the past year. I am so thankful for my hubby too! We have spent a LOT of moments together in the last year. It’s a good thing we kind of like each other! π
Love the cute tights!
Debbie Woodruff
I was so happy to “discover” Happiness Day! I’d never heard of it either until I was searching for a theme for this post. I’m really grateful for my husband. It would have been a lot harder to shelter in place alone (or with someone I didn’t like as well as love).

I am looking forward to some outdoor dininig, I hope — although here most of the time it is still far too cold for that. At least by my standards!
Nothing beats eating outside, though, does it? I was so happy that I could finally eat outside at Olana on the way to visit my mom last week — eating in your car really gets old!
Debbie Woodruff
I’ve eaten in my car, brought my food home, and eaten at the park (which is my favorite). We haven’t done outdoor dining at a restaurant yet but hopefully soon (since we’re both vaccinated).
Michelle D.
I just love this post! And, I had no idea there was such a thing as the International Day of Happiness but I’m all for it!
Debbie Woodruff
Great! I hope it makes you happy!
Kimberly Hatting
As I said on Insta, Iβve managed to find happiness this past year, too…for the most part, that is. Of course, thereβs been a lot to be sad & scared of, but I just prefer to not dwell on that. And those tights! Iβm kind of loving the biker-length shorts, too π
Debbie Woodruff
I love the tights and the bike shorts! So cute and, well, happy!
It’s been a tough year. I feel grateful for what I have that keeps me happy.

I didn’t know tomorrow was International Happiness Day but I will try to find a reason to smile. Today was hard, so it may take some deep digging, but we will get there.
Your reasons are amazing. I needed to see that sweet doggy picture.
Debbie Woodruff
I’m sorry you’re having a tough day and I hope you feel a little better soon. I tried to get all 12 dogs on my lap but they weren’t going for it. π
Zenaida Arroyo
I had no idea about International Happiness Day! This is a great post and I LOVE it!! Running, my cats, my family, and my coworkers are just a few things that make me happy.
Debbie Woodruff
I think one thing this past year has done is really helped us realize what is important and how small things can make us happy.
Denise
Certain outfits defining me me happy! My hubby is pretty great too.
Going out for a margarita and tacos makes me so happy!
Denise
Wow my comment?
Certain outfits definitely make me happy.
Debbie Woodruff
Oh, I don’t know. Tacos and margaritas make me happy too. π
