As I finish up week four of sheltering in place, I’m starting to wonder what life will be like when this is over. While America (and presumably humans in general) tends to have a short memory about certain things, will we be able to go back to business as usual when we finally emerge from our homes? Will we head back to work, back to Starbucks, back to our normal lives and try to forget everything that we’ve been through? I guess time will tell.
Or has this changed us in a deep, immutable way? Has this return to a more basic way of living made us appreciate the simple things like time with family, eating at home, going for walks, gardening, all of the things we’ve been filling our days with? Only time will tell.
Time will tell
Shelter in place, week 4. Starting to think about what's going to happen when this is over. Do we head back to work, to Starbucks, to school? Or have things changed forever? Time will tell. #quarantinelife #shelterinplaceClick To TweetWhile my previous Sheltering in Place posts were somewhat lighthearted, there were two things this week that are anything but. That being said, they are important to watch and/or read.
The Sound of Silence
The first is a video that was put together by Tiago Teixeira using the Simon and Garfunkle song The Sound of Silence performed by Disturbed. It is haunting and, I’ll admit, while watching it I had my first good cry since this all began.
ETA: This video keeps disappearing. I believe it’s because of copyright issues, but then it reappears for a little while (meaning it might go away again). I wouldn’t bother but it’s so beautiful and haunting that I need to share it. It is no longer the Disturbed version. Instead it is being performed by Holly Henry.
If you saw it when it was first posted, you might want to watch it again. It had to be pulled down at one point due to copyright issues (not with the music, they gave permission). It was re-edited, but it is just as powerful.
Ultimate Gaslighting?
We know that this will be over at some point. That Shelter in Place restrictions will be removed. What will happen then? Will we go back to our normal lives? Have we been permanently changed? Here is an interesting perspective on what’s going to happen. Again, time will tell.
Prepare for the Ultimate Gaslighting
Pachelbel’s Canon
To finish on a somewhat brighter note, the La Scala Philharmonic invited musicians around the world to join them in celebrating Easter by performing Pachelbel’s Canon. It’s amazing to see the musicians all playing from home, but all playing together as one.
My Week
While we wait to see what time will tell us, my life is strangely normal. While I’m not working right now, that is my usual normal during the summer when most of my clients leave town. The difference is that it will be longer and the weather is currently much, much better.
We had some rain, which is quite unusual in April, that kept me inside one day, but other than that I’ve been enjoying getting outdoors, running, and working on the two CEU courses I mentioned last week. While we don’t go out very much anyway, I’ve spent more time cooking than normal, making some of our favorite recipes much more frequently than when I’m working. Here are a few recipes I’ve made just this week.
Spaghetti and (Meatless) Meatballs
Plus, one of my favorite veganized recipes, Farfalle with (Vegan) Chicken, Mushrooms, and Cilantro, which I know I posted at some point but can’t find now. Plus I’ve been making Beyond Burgers about once a week, which is way more than I would usually eat a burger, but I picked up an 8-pack at Costco, so it’s burger time quite often at our house!
This Week’s Workouts
Monday: Strength Workout
Tuesday: 6.5 miles running with Alan
Wednesday: Unplanned rest day because it rained. Some core work
Thursday: 3.4 miles running plus a TRX workout I’ll be sharing soon
Friday: 5 miles running (2 with my dog, 3 more on my own)
Saturday: 3.1 miles running with Alan and my dogs.
Sunday: 8 miles running
I don’t usually run four days in a row but the rain day threw me off and kept me confused about what day it actually was. Total miles: 26
Just for Fun
Actually I’m not sure how posting our high school pictures on Factbook shows solidarity with current seniors who are missing out on their final year, but what the heck. They’re good for a laugh. Here you go.
Finally, thanks once again to the health care angels who are putting their own lives at risk by continuing to serve us through this pandemic.
How are you holding up? What do you think about what’s going to happen post-pandemic?

You had a great week of running miles. I do wish that I could run 4 back to back days but my body would not have it. We were also wondering what life will be like when this is all over. I hope we find out soon!
Debbie Woodruff
I hope so too. This has gone on so long already but who knows when it will be over?
Catrina
Love your outfit where the socks fit the mask!
My week was full of running in wonderful spring weather.
I wonder how life will be after the lockdown, too! Interesting article about “Gaslighting”. Thanks!
Unfortunately, the “Sound of Silence” video didn’t work for me, but maybe that’s just me.
Debbie Woodruff
Thanks. That was totally by accident too. My husband was the one who noticed that they matched.
I reloaded the Sound of Silence video. It keeps getting taken down for different copyright issues. There is a different singer now but it is well worth the watch. Before it disappears again!
Catrina
Got the video this time! Thanks for reloading. It was sad, but in an awesome way.

Parts of my life are normal, that is for sure. I’m still running and CrossFitting. Eating well. I feel like I’m settling into this new normal, but with Trump threatening to reopen the country May 1, I’m a little bit anxious, worried that it is too soon. I hope that the governors and businesses are a little more cautious. I read that Gaslighting article and since we’re already being gaslighted, it wasn’t anything new. I’m sure learning a lot about people right now! You think you know someone…
Your high school portrait is beautiful! I can’t find mine…and that is probably a good thing.
Debbie Woodruff
I am also afraid that he and some of the governors are going to move too quickly and we’re going to be in trouble again. Look at Florida! We’ll see in a little while the consequences of that one. I’m in California, so I know we’ll be taking it slowly, but I hope we can keep the dumb Floridians out!

What a great week!! I can relate to a rainy day throwing things off balance, especially if I’m in the midst of a training cycle. Anyways, although things are crazy & far from normal, I refuse to give into the gloom & doom. I’m not denying all the tragedy & turmoil, but dwelling on it is not gonna change things. I just hope we are able to move beyond this & be grateful for having endured the battle.
Debbie Woodruff
I agree. I try to stay positive because life is still good for me. I feel bad for so many people who have lost their jobs or their businesses. These are tough times that will take a while to recover from.
Cari
Great musical pieces, and so good to see you on the Zoom today.
Love the matchy
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! I love some of the music/videos that people have been putting together lately. Sad but inspiring.
