This week I’m joining Wendy and participating in the Running Treasure Hunt! The idea of the hunt is that you find five interesting or weird things on your run during the week and share, either on your blog or social media. Of course, that sounded great, but then the reality of my running week set in. Seemed like a pretty boring week. I did complete my mission, though.
The Milestone Pod
I’ve also been testing the new Milestone Pod, which was just released on Wednesday. It’s an updated version of the original pod (which I reviewed a few months back), and it has a few extra bells and whistles as well as an updated look. The app has also been updated.
Basically, the Milestone Pod keeps track of a variety of running metrics that give you a lot of feedback on how you run, including stride length, cadence, foot strike, ground contract, leg swing, and rate of impact. It tracks your mileage and your pace, and it even keeps track of your shoe mileage.
All this information is compiled in the free app, which syncs wirelessly through Bluetooth after your run. You never have to worry about buttons or finding satellites, the Milestone Pod is ready to go and senses when you start your run (or walk) and when you stop.
If you’re a data junkie like I am you will love the Milestone Pod. It really puts all the information that you want need right at your fingertips. I really appreciate all the different metrics that the Milestone Pod provides.
It does need to be calibrated a few times, by entering in the correct mileage, as it “learns” about your running. After that, it is surprisingly accurate even though it does not have a GPS. It really is a budget-friendly tool that can give you a lot of information about your running style.
Running Treasure Hunt
Like I said, it seemed to be a boring week in running. That could be because I generally run the same route, with a few variations, on the trails, every day. I did make one change this week, though. As I begin my own Four Week Faster 10k Training Program, in preparation for the LaceUp Running Series Irvine 10k, I started this morning with a tempo run. On the real road. And even saw a few interesting things (in between gasping breaths).
Here are my Running Treasure Hunt finds:
Seashells
As you know, I live in the desert. So it is interesting, geologically, to find seashells on the trails near my home. And a lot of them, as you can see.
A Balancing Act
I saw these for the first time the other day. They are obviously manmade, so someone took quite a bit of time to build them. I think they’re very interesting.
The Sun
The sun actually looked more like a full moon Thursday morning. You can see that there is still a lot of debris and dust in the air left over from our huge dust storm last weekend. That is called a haboob, which is an interesting name.
Injured Mouse
I think this poor little guy may have been run over by a car. He was limping along, in the middle of the road, as I was running home yesterday. Other than the limp, though, he seemed okay. Alert, not bleeding, and didn’t seem to be in pain. I hate these kinds of things because I’m never really sure what to do. What I did do was use a piece of paper to push him (he could walk) toward the curb. I didn’t want to touch him, but I was able to get him over there and out of the way of traffic
Real Treasure!
A couple years ago you may remember that I found $20 while I was running. I wasn’t nearly as lucky this week, but I did find 40 cents!
I had a fun time participating in the Running Treasure Hunt. It reminded me to keep my eyes open and look around while I’m running.
Finally, the winner of the Aftershokz Trekz Titanium headphones is Kim Pincombe-Cole! Congratulations Kim. I know you’re going to love your new headphones!
Are you a data junkie when you run? What interesting things have you seen lately on the run (or bike, walk, etc)? Let me know in the comments.
I was given a Milestone Pod to try out in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.

Seashells in the desert? Now that has my mind working overtime! It’s kind of fun to be super observant and think about all the things you see on the run. Your runs are sure different from mine, which makes this kind of fun! I may do it again in the fall or winter. Thanks for linking up and playing along!
And I wouldn’t mind trying that Milestone Pod–altho I do like looking at my wrist and checking my pace on my Garmin. I am a data junkie for sure.

Well, most of this area was once covered by water, so it actually makes sense. You can see the lines on the hills around us from the early water levels.
I loved this idea, so I hope you do it again! I still wear my Garmin, but I sync my pod at the end. I love seeing all that info.
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner
ooh probably could do without seeing a mouse! We do see deer a lot out here. I have not used the milestone pod but it looks like it has lots of great data. Have a wonderful weekend!
Debbie Woodruff
I know! I felt so bad about the mouse. But usually my wildlife sightings are more like roadrunners, jackrabbits and an occasional coyote, which I would have preferred. Better than a rattlesnake though! 🙂
Canus @ Runnerlight
Interesting post! I like… I remember that once i run in the forest, i run into seeing a snake. I scare… And then, i decided not to run in the forest. ^^ At present, i enjoy running hill. Feeling is great when standing on the hill.
Debbie Woodruff
I’ve seen a few snakes in my time. Fortunately ( guess), my husband is usually running in front of me, so he sees them first. Either that or he wakes them up just in time for me to run by! 🙂
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
That sounds like so much fun!! Sometimes I get bored of straight up running so I Think I’d enjoy something like this!
Debbie Woodruff
It does make you think of something besides how hot it is or how tired your are. 🙂
Marsha
I find money all the time on my runs. I’m known for it among our running group. We can be running together, and I’m the one to spot the money. They know if I abruptly stop, there’s money on the ground! lol!
Debbie Woodruff
Lucky girl! My husband is usually the one that sees things, including money (and critters!). I, apparently, am blind (which explains why I fall so often 🙂 ).
Abby
Ah that little mouse! Cute but eekk I’m scared of them
Debbie Woodruff
You should have seen me try to move that poor little mouse without actually touching him. In all honesty, there was a chance that he could bite me, but my real reason was I was just scared.
Hilary
I love that idea, it would get me out running and thinking a little less about the heat! But that looks like some great running scenery to me!
Debbie Woodruff
It is very beautiful! And I still, after living here more than 20 years, stop just to look at the views sometimes.

That milestone pod looks really awesome! I may have to try it. That poor mouse, it was nice of you to help him across the street for sure! I liked this link-up this week. Fun experience.
Debbie Woodruff
I enjoyed it too. It was fun to look for things on the run. Made the run feel easier!
Kayla @ Blondes Have More Run
What?!? You saw some awesome things on your run! I want to try doing this on my run tomorrow AM. I feel like I won’t find anything too interesting, but we’ll see! You never know 🙂
Jody - Fit at 58
I found $20 not too long ago on my run! I need a couple basics for food & that came in handy! A cookie too! 🙂
Jennifer Kelly
Oh my gosh this sounds like so much fun!!! And seashells in the desert? Awesome!
Esther
What a fun idea! A running treasure hunt. I will have to try that once my hip gives me the ok to run again!
That pod looks cool. I love data and am always seeking new ways to be a more productive runner!
jill conyers
This is such a fun idea. I haven’t really seen anything interesting or out of the ordinary lately. I need to change up my routes.
Steven Ponder
Aww, poor little mouse. Glad to know he was okay.
Mary Beth Jackson
I am a data junkie and I love my new Fitbit Blaze! The milestone pod sounds cool! My best girlfriend move to Phoenix so she has been sharing some of the haboob activity with us- crazy stuff!
