I can’t believe it’s the last Friday of May! That means it’s time for Runfessions! We have had a month of amazing weather here in the California desert. In spite of a rocky start, with temperatures up into the triple digits, it cooled down for most of the month, settling into the low 90s and with lows in the 60s! I know that may not sound chilly to most people, but believe me, it’s beautiful weather for May where I live!
I'm sharing some of my deepest #running secrets for May #Runfessions! What do you have to runfess? #running Click To TweetMay Runfessions
This is my first time joining in Runfessions, a monthly link-up hosted by Marcia where runners share their deepest, darkest running secrets. I runfess that the reason I usually miss out is that I totally forget about it until I start reading the posts on the last Friday of the month. Fortunately, I happened to see Wendy’s post and I thought, what the heck! So here I am!
With just over a week until the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Diego, I runfess that I never actually created a training plan. Although that is something I do all the time for my running clients, instead I went week to week pretty much winging it. I gradually added mileage, tried to get two high-intensity workouts per week, and took a cutback week or two. I’m hoping that after 25 years of race training this will get me to the finish line. We’ll see!
I think I have developed an addiction to Goodr Sunglasses. I runfess that, since I first discovered these colorful, inexpensive running sunglasses just over two months ago, I have purchased six pairs, and just today ordered two more! Plus, I’m waiting for my Skirt Sports branded pair to be ready and I’ll be ordering those too! Thank goodness they’re only $25!
I share a lot of running tips, both to my coaching clients and to those of you who read my blog. I runfess that I do not always follow my own advice. For example, even though I have posted many videos about foam rolling both before and after running, I don’t often do it. I’m hoping this runfession will shame spur me to be more consistent.
In the last six months or so, I have lost almost 20 pounds. Almost nobody has noticed. One advantage of being tall is that you can carry a little extra weight without it showing (too much). I runfess that sometimes it hurts my feelings that people don’t notice. While I didn’t make drastic changes, I’ve worked hard to eat less and make better choices, and it’s paid off. Now if someone would only notice!
Well, that’s it for May Runfessions! I hope to remember be back next month!
Come on, you must have something to runfess. Let’s hear it!

Welcome to Runfessions! This is such a fun link-up and I’m glad you could join this month.
Have so much fun at RnRSD! I really wish I could come but cross country flights are so expensive. When I did the race a few years ago, it was SO much fun! The Pro Compression ambassadors really make the weekend a whole lotta fun.
Debbie Woodruff
I’m excited to be with the Pro ambassadors this year. So many of them are also Rock ‘n’ Bloggers, so I felt left out last year at the RnR meet up!
Marcia
Yay Coach Debbie’s in the house!! Welcome!
Okay I TOTALLY noticed you lost weight and are looking finer than fine but how can I say that? Props to you! I know it’s not easy.
I runfess that I rarely ever write myself a plan anymore. Seat of the pants is my middle name…for me…not my athletes of course.
Thanks for linking!
Debbie Woodruff
LOL! I was telling the truth that I always forget about it until I start reading everyone’s posts on Friday! Fortunately I happened upon Wendy’s post on Thursday evening. ๐
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner
Everyone seems to be obsessed with the Goodr glasses! You are too funny with so many already. Nice to see at the Runfessions! Have a good weekend
Debbie Woodruff
I am obsessed! They’re cute and cheap! Plus they’re also polarized and have UV protection. And for the price of one pair of my husband’s favorite sunglasses I have six pairs of Goodrs!
patrick@looneyforfood.com
Does everyone ALWAYS follow their own advice? I think not, we are all guilty.
Sometimes the best training is the unplanned one, I bet you will be great for the race.
Debbie Woodruff
Thanks! Even though I’m not following a specific plan I still get in all the workouts, so hopefully you’re right and I’ll be great (or at least fine ๐ ).
FYI, I tried to comment on your blog this morning and it kept saying that I was a “suspected bot” and blocked me. Weird because I’ve commented before and I didn’t write anything weird.
Kimberly Hatting
I know you’ll be fine for RnR ๐ I seldom follow any kind of a plan for 13.1’s either….I try to stay in constant “13.1 race-ready” form anyways. I hear ya on the being tall and weight stuff. I’m 5’9, and feel like an idiot complaining about weight loss/gain because I’m really the only one who notices LOL Yes, it’s a good problem, but also has its frustrations.
Debbie Woodruff
I used to stay race ready. With a 10 mile base. Ah, the good ol’ days.
Megan @ Meg Go Run
Those sunglasses are super cute!
Congratulations on your weight loss!
Okay, so I have actually stopped commenting on people’s weight loss unless it is a very close friend and they TOLD me they are trying to lose weight. But I hate giving a “compliment” to someone for losing weight because I feel like it is like saying they didn’t look good before and now they look better. Does that make sense?
For instance, there is a woman I work with that I could tell was losing weight but I didn’t say anything to her because she didn’t say anything to me. But then she posted before/after pictures on FB and then I felt it was okay to bring it up because I then knew she was doing it on purpose and she was proud of herself.
Maybe I am thinking too much into it!!!
Debbie Woodruff
Yeah, I guess it can be tricky. I actually don’t either, unless they’re a client with that goal. But even my husband didn’t notice for months!
Megan
Well there is no excuse for your hubby! ๐
Debbie Woodruff
Well, it is less noticeable when you see someone every day. See, I gave him an excuse!
Virjinia
Man, it seems like those glasses are everywhere! They are pretty nifty.
Also, congrats on the weight loss! Sometimes people may not say anything but I’m sure they’ve noticed!
Debbie Woodruff
That’s true. Like someone said above, it can be a tricky topic. I really love my Goodrs. Though if they keep coming out with cool new colors and designs I still might go broke even if they’re cheap!
Wendy
Funny you should mention the weight loss…I was looking at your IG post yesterday and thinking that you looked like a high schooler, so slim and tall with your ponytail and knee highs on. I knew something was different!
For a half, I train like you have been. I just kind of wing it, throwing in long runs on the weekend. It seems to work for me–so why do anything different?
Thanks for the shout out and I’m so happy you were inspired to runfess! It’s kind of fun, right?
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! I wish I felt like a high schooler! ๐
I love Runfessions. Now if I can only remember next month!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness
Congrats on losing 20 lbs. That is awesome! I would be mad that no one noticed either. I have never really created a training plan for races. I’m sure you will do just fine at the race coming up.
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you. It’s hard to know to be mad that people don’t notice or to be happy to know that you looked pretty good before the loss!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets
I’m surprised this is your first time doing runfessions, they’re fun, right?!
Congratulations on your weight loss, that’s awesome!!
And enjoy your “cool” weather, we’re now starting to get up to 90 in Philly ๐
Debbie Woodruff
It is in the 90s here too, but it was in the 100s, so 90 feels pretty good. And the weather is really dry, so that helps.
I always forgot about runfessions until I started reading them on that last Friday of the month. Hopefully I can remember for next month!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile
Glad you decided to join in on the Runfessions! There have been so many things that I recommend to others that I don’t always do myself. Those sunglasses are so fun! Congrats on losing all that weight.
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! I feel kind of like a hypocrite, but I am recommending things that people should do. I just don’t always follow my own advice!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy
I lost my first 20 lbs or so when I lived in TX (I eventually lost 20 more, give or take depending on the week). No one said a word! And I am vertically challenged, so just a few extra pounds really show on me. Good job! It isn’t easy, especially as we get older.
Every one is gaga over Goodr. I really prefer wraparound sunnies. I get that they’re cute & all, but so far the craze has passed me by. ๐
Debbie Woodruff
I started to put it on about 10 years ago after my hysterectomy. I didn’t really make many changes to lose the weight, I just felt like I was finally passing through some menopause milestone. ๐
Zenaida Arroyo
Have fun in San Diego! I heard Desi will be there.
I have heard of so many people obsessed with the Goodr glasses. I bought a pair a few months ago and cannot find them. But I agree that it is a good deal for that price.
Debbie Woodruff
Des will be there and Meb too! They’re both pacing the half marathon, Meb for 1:30 and Des for 2:00. I wish I could still run a two hour half, I’d love to be paced by her.
