October is, of course, breast cancer awareness month. Everywhere you look, companies are talking Pink. For the most part, it’s a good thing, especially if they are raising money to promote education, breast health, and awareness.
None of this breast cancer awareness will mean anything if it doesn’t encourage women to be their own champion. Do your breast self-exams, have your mammograms, take the best care of your health. Do everything you can to reduce your chance that you will become one of the one in eight women who will have to deal with breast cancer.

In the spirit of Pink, here is my Pink Friday Five, a few fun, motivating, and helpful things for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Pretty in Pink
Though I’m really not much of a girly girl, I do like pink and tend to wear it year round. Here’s some Instagram proof:
Aware with Pink: Aftershokz Trekz Titanium Pink
I love my Treks Titanium Pink wireless headphones! If you read my reviews you know why. I wear them on all of my runs and during my gym workouts. And Alan, who inherited my previous pair, loves them too!
I especially love that, through October 31, Aftershokz will be donating 25% of the proceeds from every purchase of Trekz Titanium Pink to Bright Pink to fund programs for breast and ovarian cancer education and awareness. And don’t forget to use the hashtag #AwarewithPink…they will donate an additional 25 cents each time you do!
#SharetheSpark with Momentum Jewelry
Last year I did a fun promotion with Momentum Jewelry. They sent me a few Share the Spark wraps and I got to give them to people that I felt would be uplifted by them. They have a similar promotion going on through the end of October. You can purchase a Share the Spark wrap for only $10. They are a perfect gift for someone special who may need a little extra boost.
Running a Race
There are many opportunities to run a race and raise money for breast cancer awareness. One of my favorites is local to me, though not in October, Women Running Wild (now called Running Wild for Hope). The moment pictured below is always so touching. After writing the names of loved ones lost to breast cancer on pink balloons, the balloons are released into the air.
My favorite Race for the Cure memory came the first year they ran the race in Temecula, the Inland Empire Race for the Cure. My sisters, including my sister Sue, who passed away several years later from cancer, my other sister Lisa, and my niece Brynne, all did the one-mile walk together. Then Lisa and I ran the 5k together. It was very emotional for all of us to walk together, since Sue was already starting her fight.
Treat Yourself to a Massage
Massage is another type of self-care that I promote. Whether it’s to help you relax or to help you recover, massage is a wonderful thing. A couple years ago, I bumped into some folks from Zeel Massage at a local race and I was very impressed. They have excellent massage therapists and they actually come to your home or office. The price is reasonable, dependent upon where you live, but I have a deal for you! You can save $25 on your first massage with the code DWOODRUFF! Check here to find a Zeel Massage near you.
My Story
While I am so fortunate that I have never had breast cancer, I did have a scare a few years ago that confirmed the importance of taking care of your health and having regular checkups. After an abnormal mammogram, I was referred to have an Ultrasound Assisted Needle Biopsy. The biopsy indicated that I had an intraductal papilloma, which is usually not cancerous. However, they still wanted to remove it, so I ended up having a Surgical Excisional Biopsy, which came back negative. Frightening, to be sure, but I still feel very fortunate.

Anna @ Piper's Run
I’ve run the “Run for the Cure” a number of years back but haven’t had a chance to get back to it. I like to see the dollars going right to the research and not the promotional items you get from raising so much money. I don’t need anything to reward my fundraising efforts. You can opt out of receiving rewards (anything from a scarf to water bottle to pedometers in the past).
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner
Fun post! I still want to try those headphones. Have a great weekend
Julie @ Running in a Skirt
Such a big and important cause! It’s hit too close to home lately. LOVE those pink headphones.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus
I’d like to do some sort of walk for BCA. Thank you for the reminder to find one!
Marcia
I love my Aftershokz but now I’m coveting the pink ones!
Mary Beth Jackson
Nice post! I am glad your scare was just a scare! I so want a pair of the headphones and a massage right now would be terrific! TGIF!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets
I love pink and it’s great to see how much awareness breast cancer receives, since it’s SO important. I’m glad that your health scare was only a false alarm. I love those pink Aftershokz, I’m tempted to get another pair!
Coach Henness
This is a great read. I have a whole new awareness and appreciation for my breasts now that I’m breastfeeding!
Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com
I love the Momentum wraps, I need to get one! I also love your running skirt 🙂 Great post!!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home
I too had a scare a few years ago and had a needle biopsy. Fortunately, it was benign. Time for my annual mammogram!
I love that Momentum campaign–I was able to participate in it last year and it was so meaningful and empowering!
Toni
I had a scare a few years back, thankfully it was nothing. My first major 5K was the a breast cancer run.
