I guess I should start this post by saying lately, I’ve been very busy. It feels a little crazy to me to say that because we are in our offseason at work, so I’m not going in every day, and I feel like I should have all kinds of time to spare. Life isn’t like that, though, and something always comes up to fill in the blanks. Like…
News from the dog rescuer, getting ready for #Blogfest and more! Here's what's going on lately. #running #SweatPinkClick To TweetLately, Alan has been quite the Dog Rescuer
I’ve called him that many times and we both seem to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time to save stray dogs off the street and hopefully return them to their owners or add them to our pack. Lately, he has taken up a crusade to save dogs from high kill shelters by finding them furever homes.
He spends a lot of time on the phone and internet, searching for the right parents for a rescue dog. In the last few weeks alone he has matched up about seven dogs with their new families. We had three come in today, two of them picked up by happy folks and, unfortunately, one spending a couple nights in our house because a potential foster mom flaked at the last minute.
Of course, that’s on top of his ongoing feral cat care. Right now we have about 30 cats that he feeds. They are all neutered (hopefully) through the local TNR program (trap, neuter, release), and we’re hoping that the last four kittens that we just found homes for will be the last babies for a while.

Lately, I’ve been Feeling my Age
I don’t like to complain, but, well, here goes! I think this feeling was set off by the return of an issue with floaters in my eyes that I dealt with a couple years ago. Just in my other eye. It scared the heck out of me back then because it really messes with my vision, with big floaters and what looks like a layer of sand over my vision. Last time, after a near panic after reading what Dr. Google had to say, four-hour wait at the ophthalmologist, I was eventually told that it really wasn’t a big deal, it’s basically debris, like blood, in my eye, and that happens because I’m getting older (if you’re curious, I went into detail in this post). It did go away for the most part in my right eye (except my spider floater), and now it’s back with a vengeance in my left.
That is the main thing that makes me feel my age. Other things just add up, you know. Arthritis in my thumbs, aches in my back, difficulty sleeping. I tell you, getting old is not for sissies. And I’m definitely not a sissy, so you won’t hear me complain here for a while. I just needed to whine a little today.
I am a Revo2lution Running Coach
While I am already certified by RRCA and USATF, I am apparently a certification junkie because I just couldn’t resist a great deal on Dr. Jason Karp’s Revo2lution Running Coaching Certification. It was an online course so I went into study mode last weekend and passed my test on Sunday! I love having multiple certifications because I feel it gives me a broader spectrum of information.
I’m Training for Half Marathon #49!
I’m gearing up to train for America’s Finest City Half Marathon! It’s only a couple months away, but I figure I’ve got a good base after Rock ‘n’ Roll, so I’ll be fine. I’ve done it many times, but not for about 10 years, so I’m excited to get back to one of the best half marathon in Southern California. My friend Christina is going to run too and I hope to get her in better shape for her second half marathon than she was for her first.
Did you catch my Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon Race Report
Blogfest is in 2 Weeks!
I am so excited to go to Blogfest again at the end of June! This year it’s in San Diego! I’m staying at a VRBO with a couple other bloggers, and I just can’t wait! The best part is always the people, both seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I always learn something new from the great speakers that will be there, and the last two days will be devoted to fitness at the IDEAWorld Fitness Convention! You know I’ll be sharing it all!
Will you be there? Here are some packing tips!

I feel you on feeling my age. Since my bike crash, I’ve struggled a little bit with my energy. I’ve also been really stiff–doing yoga has been a challenge! Which means I need to do more, right?
You’re doing great and so am I. We have to just keep on going. The alternative is so much worse!!! But that doesn’t mean we can’t commiserate, right?
Debbie Woodruff
Definitely need some commiseration once in a while! It’s fine to be tough and all, but sometimes it is hard. As you well know.
Patrick@looneyforfood.com
Wow you have a lot going on and a lot to look forward to!
Debbie Woodruff
Thanks! That’s a much better way to look at it!
Fairytales and fitness
You guys are so great to rescue all those animals. You’ve inspired me to search for a Golden Retriver rescue ( I don’t even know if there is one in my area)!
I hope your eye thing clears up.
Good luck with marathon #49!
Debbie Woodruff
Thanks! Let me know if you get a new Golden! So many that need homes!
Marcia
I hear you on the age thing. It seems like its always something to the extent I begin to wonder what’s next. But we’ll just keep on moving! Have so much fun at Blogfest!
Debbie Woodruff
Ain’t that the truth? Someday you need to come to Blogfest. It’s so much fun!
AmyC
Congrats on your new certification! I’ve been thinking about getting into the fitness instructor field…just need to take the plunge!
Debbie Woodruff
Do it! If it’s something you enjoy it’s a great career!
Kimberly Hatting
I’d love to do Blogfest someday!
I totally admire your willingness to take in all of those stray animals 😉 That’s an incredibly unselfish and loving thing to do.
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you, though I think we get a lot back from it.
Shathiso
Having just done my first Half, I am in owe that you will be doing #49 soon! That’s incredible!
Debbie Woodruff
Well, congratulations on your first (though looking at the title of your post it didn’t turn out exactly as you hoped). It seems so long since my first. Well, it was. In 1996 I think. Yikes!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile
It’s weird how during times when you think things should be slowing down, sometimes it feels busier than ever. Blogfest sounds like it will be alot of fun! I’ve though about getting another coaching certification but just haven’t made the commitment yet.
Debbie Woodruff
I got such a great deal on the certification that I couldn’t say no! Plus it gives me 15 AFAA CEUs, which is all I need to renew (aside from 2 directly from AFAA). That is a huge savings!
Renée
amazing what you guys do with the animal rescue. I really admire that! here in the Netherlands we have zero percent stray animals. it’s always odd to see strays in other countries.
I hear you on the age thing too. I’m been perimenopausal for a while now (which sucks because I get hot flashes all the time and sleep pretty terribly) and I feel like things are falling apart right and left (even though my insides are super fit and healthy!). I had a thing with my eyes too, recently, and really freaked. I already have hearing loss, please let me keep my eyes for a while, you know!?
I would love to do blogfest at some point. I went to Fitbloggin a few times and LOVED it. so much fun.
Thinking about going to RnR Vegas now! Really wanted to try for Chicago but Vegas is a better priced flight. So… maybe see you there!
Debbie Woodruff
Ooh, I hope to see you in Vegas! It’s going to be a lot of fun!
I’m post-menopausal and I still have hot flashes! It’s been 10 years since my hysterectomy, but I’m trying to wean off the hormone therapy.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner
Congrats on the new run coach cert! I’d love to hear more about how it is different than the RRCA course. I was not the biggest fan of that course when I took it. I felt so busy the last month hoping it slows down now a bit
Debbie Woodruff
It’s been a while since I took the RRCA course, so I’m not completely sure, but it seems like this course was more, um, scientific. The first part is a lot of energy systems science, which is always my weak point. But I guess I need to review. The rest was a lot of good information about training. I liked it a lot.
Cathy
Wow! Talk about busy, rescuing animals looks like a full time job in itself! I have never been to San Diego much less to a blogfest. Sounds like something I need to look into! Love reading your blog, I’m Cathy BTW, seems weird to me to read blogs and finally comment without some kind of introduction ha ha 🙂
Debbie Woodruff
Hi Cathy, nice to meet you! Yes, you should try to make it to Blogfest someday. It’s a great chance to make new friends and connections and learn more about blogging.
