So we’re at the final countdown to race day. The LaceUp Running Series 10k in Irvine is on Saturday and I’m (mostly) ready!
Countdown to Race Day
I only had four weeks to prepare after a summer of hot, slow trail running, but in spite of missing some training time due to my work hours, I feel pretty good about the race. I followed my 4-week faster 10 training program, and, with my last tempo run on Friday, feel like I’ve done what I can do. I have one last long-ish run on Monday, then easy running through the end of the week.
Don’t forget that you can get 15% off registration for any LaceUp Running Series race by using my discount code debbieruns15. That includes Ventura on October 22, Palos Verdes on November 19, or Riverside on December 4. I’d love to see you at one or all of them!

Postcards from the Weekend
Because of my work schedule, I ended up running Thursday-Sunday, including a tempo run on Friday. After a late start on Sunday (again!), I’m planning my final long run for today. I didn’t take many photos on the run this week, but since this post is supposed to be all about pictures, here’s what I’ve got.
So it’s not exactly a running picture, but the lighting was just right and it made a great opportunity to take a break in the middle of my tempo run. Thanks once again to Wendy for the great photo tips!
Sweating a little pink after my recovery run on Saturday, though it was the coolest that we’ve had in months (about 78 at 6:00 am. Yes, it’s been so hot that 78 is cool.).
After a late start on Sunday (which of course was warmer than the day before), Alan and I spent most of the run searching for my Milestone Pod, which had fallen off my shoe some time the day before. Sadly, we didn’t find it, but that won’t stop me from continuing to search.
So, we’re at the final countdown to race day. Wish me luck!
Happy First Birthday to Emma!
As I mentioned last week, we spent Saturday at my granddaughter Emma’s first birthday party.
Three generations: My daughter-in-law Sarah, Emma, me, and my niece Brynne.
The birthday girl and her dog, Chloe. Pretty sure Emma will be walking any day now.
My beautiful daughter-in-law Sarah and Emma
Samuel, almost four and always in motion.
The 3 Stages of a Birthday Cake
We had a wonderful time celebrating Emma’s first birthday and spending time with my son Nathan and his family, but the best part of the whole day was some news that they shared when we first arrived.
My son is a computer guy (that’s as detailed as this mom can get). A month or so ago, he had received an offer of what he called “his dream job.” Of course, as his mom, I was thrilled. One problem, though, it was in Minnesota! So while I was excited for him, Alan and I were both so sad about the thought of the family moving so far away.
The good news is that he has been offered another job. And it’s in Southern California! We are so happy that it looks like they will be staying nearby! (Hopefully. I’m not jumping the gun. The offer letter for the job is supposed to be sent today!)

OH I LOVE THE BEHIND THE SCENES HERE.
Emma and Sarah <3
That cake face <3 <3
AND AND AND the fact that they can now stay close by in S.California.
Hmmmm.
Maybe I should let him look for a job for me too? ๐
SoCal and anything NOT in computers!
xo
Debbie Woodruff
It was the best news ever! And nice for my son is that these jobs come looking for him.
Coco
Oh my gosh, what a cutie! I never had a milestone pod fall out! I hope you find it!
Debbie Woodruff
It is the newer pod and it had fallen out before, but I thought it was secure since it had been on the same shoe for a couple weeks. I’ll be on the lookout again today!
Coco
Do you work with them? You should let them know you are having issues. Could be a design flaw .
Debbie Woodruff
I have the new one and it fits in differently than the original. You press it in, then turn it. I will let them know, because I’m sure if it happens to me it could happen to someone else.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home
Awww..that first birthday is so bittersweet! Love the cake face. I have to say that one of THE BEST parts of my job as a PNP is getting to wish my babies happy birthday! They know it’s a big deal…
Keep those pictures coming! <3
Debbie Woodruff
Thanks! I know for moms it is bittersweet. All of a sudden your precious infant is a toddler. Having been through the complete cycle twice, I know that each stage is precious, even when they are (almost) 40! ๐
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub
Your granddaughter is so cute! She did a number on that cake.
Debbie Woodruff
She had frosting everywhere! So much fun!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner
Emma is just adorbs! You gotta have the first birthday cake frosting in your hair pic.
Debbie Woodruff
We never did the 1st birthday cake when my kids were little, so I’m really enjoying now! They really are so much fun to watch!
Ivanna
Looks like such a fun weekend! What a cutie ๐ I love the little ears, that cake must have been the bomb lol ๐
Debbie Woodruff
She had that frosting everywhere, including in her ears!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus
Happy first birthday, Emma!! That last cake picture is amazing haha. Hope you have a great race this weekend!
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! I’m looking forward to it! It’s been a while since I ran a 10k.
Anna @ Piper's Run
First birthday’s are so much fun! Our niece just turned one, nothing like messy cake when you turn 1!
Debbie Woodruff
I love this tradition! It didn’t exist when my own kids were you, so I love doing it with my grandchildren.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running
Your granddaughter is absolutely adorable! I can only imagine how special celebrating her birthday was for all of you.
Debbie Woodruff
It was great. Even better was finding out that they won’t be moving across the country!
Ange
Your granddaughter looks adorable in her hat and tutu!!
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! I’d have to agree! ๐
Carmy
She is SO cute with the tutu and mouse ears!
Debbie Woodruff
Isn’t she? This is the first girl in our family so I’m enjoying all the frilly stuff!
Kimberly Hatting
What precious pics…and she has (what looks to be?) a potential running tutu? ๐ Does Grandma have a matching one? ๐
Debbie Woodruff
Hmm, I’ve never been a tutu runner, but if I could get my granddaughter to run with me (when she’s a bit older, of course) I would go for it!
Michelle Rogers
LOVE your photos!! Happy birthday, Emma!
Debbie Woodruff
Thank you! It was hard to pick just a few to share. I’m a good grandma, I probably took about 1000! ๐
Lex @ Flecksoflex
Aw, bummer on losing your Pod! I lost mine at the Ridiculous Obstacle Course race last weekend, but I fortunately had the updated version arrive in the mail around the same time. Fortunately they’re inexpensive!
Debbie Woodruff
Good timing. I still have my old one. It’s the new one that I lost ๐
Make sure that it is secure. I ran with it for a couple weeks, just keeping it on my shoe. Then it fell off. Not sure if it came loose or what.
Rachel @ RachelMcMichael.com
Love the photos!!! Beautiful scenery for your run, and looks like the birthday went well!
Debbie Woodruff
The birthday was great. Just family, which in my opinion makes it even better. ๐
Jaycie
I’ve done the Lexus LaceUp – have fun! It’s such a great course in Ventura. Not sure about the other locations.
Debbie Woodruff
I’m looking forward to the Ventura race. I’m sure it will be beautiful.
Coach Henness
I hope you find your milestone pod! Happy Birthday to Emma and I’m glad there was a job offer closer than Minnesota!
Debbie Woodruff
Me too! Though I searched again on my run today with no luck, so the chances are getting slimmer. ๐
I am soooooo happy that they will not be moving! Seriously, it made my year!
Jenn
That race sounds like a lot of fun! And I’m sure you are more than ready!
Looks like Emma’s birthday was a blast. She didn’t like that cake at all, did she?!
Debbie Woodruff
It’s so funny to watch kids that don’t usually get sugar. It’s like discovery time!
Mary Beth Jackson
I love the 3 stages of birthday cake- how fun! Beautiful family and it looks like a great weekend! Good luck with the race- sounds like you are ready!
Patty @ Reach Your Peak
Love your postcard recap! I’m in a similar situation with the job thing as your son haha. My BF is interviewing with a company in myrtle beach, SC, (we livei n NJ) and I don’t want to leave NJ! And my family doesnt want that eithe robviously haha. But its tough bc I am obviously not going to root for him to not get the job. So I guess we will see what happens! He has a second interview with the president next week!
Debbie Woodruff
It’s a tough situation. I’m so proud of my daughter-in-law. She was so supportive and positive when it looked like they were going. Now that they are staying (and that is confirmed now), she is so happy. Good luck. I hope it all works out for the best. And you may love Myrtle Beach. ๐
