First of all, thanks to all of you who commented on my post about Sydney. Losing a pet is very difficult, but knowing that you understand and send your love and support makes is so important to me. For the reasons you’ll read below, I haven’t responded to each individual comment yet, but please know that I appreciate your support during this difficult time.
This is my first time behind a computer in almost a week, and it’s a little hard to know where to begin. Aside from a few Instagram and Facebook updates over the holiday, I pretty much disappeared from the inter-webs. Sometimes that’s a good thing, for good reasons. Other times, well, no so much. Here’s a little life recap from the week.
It’s hard for a week to get worse when it starts off with the death of your beloved dog, but mine certainly didn’t get any better over the next few days. When I wrote about our visit to Big Bear, I mentioned my upset stomach, attributing it to something I ate. It seemed to get better, but then by Monday afternoon, my energy level dipped, and I lost my appetite (extremely unusual, believe me). I picked at my dinner and went to bed early. Mostly I thought that this was part of my emotional reaction to Sydney’s death.
I got up as usual on Tuesday morning, and even went for a short run with Alan and the dogs. But by the time I got to work, my stomach was so upset that I barely made it through teaching my strength class. I had to excuse myself to use the restroom a couple times (I won’t go into detail here, but believe me, it was bad. Really bad).
After class and after sitting around clutching my stomach for a couple hours, I found someone to cover the rest of my shift and went home around noon. I immediately went to bed and stayed there for the rest of the day (when I wasn’t in the bathroom).
On Wednesday, I did something I haven’t done in the nine years I have been working at my fitness center: I called in sick. I was fortunately able to find someone to cover (otherwise I would have had to go in, being the boss and all). I spent the day in bed, really hoping that I would start to feel better. Not only did I feel like a big baby, unable to do anything beyond moan and complain, I also had a planned day off the next day and plans for a 5k on the 4th of July.
By Thursday I was so dehydrated and drained (literally-haha), that even though I felt better, my toes, calves and even my abdominal muscles were cramping at the slightest movement. I was determined though, not to mess up our plans. Literally, again. I tried to keep eating and drinking properly through the day, but since my stomach hadn’t quite settled, I still felt dehydrated.
I recapped the holiday (which was the opposite of the rest of the week..awesome) in here. Don’t want to mess up so much misery with happy stories! Just a few words for now: Family. Grandsons. Tiffany. Running. Friends. Party. Fireworks. Now back to my complaining.
We came home on Friday. Independence Day is very scary for dogs, so we always try to be here if we can. Even in the desert, where there isn’t much going on because, well, hot.
To top everything off, July 5 was the 21st anniversary of my mother’s death. It’s been a long time, but I still think about her every day. She was pretty amazing.
By Sunday (finally!) I was feeling almost completely normal. I was anxious to go for a run, as well as give the dogs some needed exercise, even though realizing that, when I woke up at 4:30 in the morning, it was already 85 degrees. Not a good sign.
By the evening, I actually felt like cooking dinner. My Spicy Lime Soup (with vegan chicken and avocado) turned out really good and I’ll share the recipe with you later this week.
Well, I think I’ve done all the bitching and moaning that I am allowed for a year, so you can expect a lot more positivity over the next few days. I think you know, if you read my blog, that I’m generally a positive person, so even a random tough week won’t bring me down for long. As long as my stomach doesn’t hurt, anyway.
