Another (Mostly) Pictures Story

After leaving Ventura on Sunday, Alan and I headed up the coast to visit with an old friend of his who he hadn’t seen for 30 years. They had reconnected through facebook, and Matt and his wife Pat had invited us to stay the night. When Alan told me they lived near Santa Barbara, we planned to take them to dinner that evening at a fairly new vegan restaurant that had received great reviews on Happy Cow (they are not vegan, but we love to share the lifestyle we love!). That wasn’t going to work, because as it turns out, they live about 30 miles east of Santa Barbara, closer to Santa Inez, where I sure there are restaurants, but I sure didn’t see any.

We had a lovely time, and I really feel that I have made two new friends. I decided to let my camera do the talking and keep my words to a minimum (maybe a caption or two here and there). Here’s the story in (mostly) pictures.

Pets, they have pets! The black horse is Egypt. The two miniature horses are mother and daughter, Espresso and Latte. The tabby cat above is Sam. Sam slept with us, nuzzled us, and basically gave us our fill of pet love that we need when we are away from our own pack. Not pictured are two dogs, Chapman and Franky (who reminded me of my Olivia!), and a tuxedo cat, whose name I can’t remember.

Look at that abundance of food! Before we arrived, Pat and Matt didn’t even know we were vegetarian, let alone vegan. With our plan of taking them to dinner gone by the wayside, Pat put together this delicious meal of roasted Brussels sprouts with walnuts and capers, a salad with roasted sweet potatoes, garbanzo beans, and arugula, plus beets on the side.

Views! It was so pretty there. In the Santa Ynez Valley, surrounded by vineyards and horses farms, very little traffic and few neighbors, Matt’s home is situated atop a hill with 360 degree views of the valley. About five miles as the crow flies from Neverland, Michael Jackson’s estate, and a few other celebrities sprinkled in the mix, the night was very quiet and dark, even compared to La Quinta, which is pretty quiet and dark itself.

No, I’m not selling you cigarettes. The top picture is Matt from his modeling days. Interestingly, that photo shoot took place at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, where Alan and I met and got married.

I had a great time meeting Alan’s old friend and his wife, and making them my own friends. We hope to bring them out to the desert (we promised not until it cools off a bit, though), and introduce them to our pack.

How was your weekend? Have you reconnected with old friends through facebook or other ways? Do tell!
